Years ago I posted a couple of essays on my author site called "Unusual Occurrences" and "More Unusual Occurrences." They were collections of mostly trivial and anecdotal synchronicities, coincidences, and premonitions from my personal life I still keep a record of such things in a journal.

Yes, I'm aware that they can be "explained" by the ever-helpful truism, usually delivered with condescending weariness, that in a universe of infinite possibilities, even very unlikely things are bound to happen now and then. How persuasive anyone finds this mantra is a personal matter. For me, it can explain a certain amount of strangeness in the world, but not an unlimited amount.

Anyway, within the last 24 hours I had two such occurrences, both very trivial, and I figured I would mention them here. They do not prove anything, but to me they are indicative of the everyday role that psi plays in our lives — a role so clandestine and marginal that we are usually unaware of it.

Yesterday I found myself thinking of a satirical variation on the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty," which would begin, "Humpty Trumpty sat on a wall…" I thought this could be a clever dig at Donald Trump, but I was unable to complete the rhyme. Later that day I flipped through a copy of a magazine called The Week and came across this cartoon:

TrumptyPolitical cartoon by Glenn McCoy, available online here.

At a different time yesterday, I was musing on old-time special-effects master Ray Harryhausen, and specifically thinking about the death pose of his creation the Cyclops (in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), which is almost identical to the death pose of his earlier creation, the Ymir (in Twenty Million Miles to Earth). The fact that he chose almost the exact same pose for both models, which were built around the same (refused) armature, struck me as either a stylistic decision or an inside joke. Anyway, the first thing I saw on my Facebook newsfeed this morning was a post from a Harryhausen group with this photo:

Ymir

That's the Ymir in its death pose.

Pure chance in both cases? Could be. I've been thinking a lot (in fact, too much) about Trump lately, and I've always been a bit Harryhausen-obsessed. But the specific parallels, right down to the fact that the Humpty Trumpty poem was unfinished in the cartoon just as I was unable to finish it in my thoughts, are suggestive to me.

As Goldfinger says in the movie named after him, "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action." Rightly or wrongly, when things like this happen often enough, I see a pattern.

I might have told this one before, but it was certainly an odd one. I was in school, studying poli sci. I came out of my class on U.S. foreign policy, and thought to call a friend. I dialed what at least what I thought was her telephone number. Instead, I got the U.S. Pentagon – really. And in case anyone’s interested, they answer the phone with “The Pentagon.”

I can’t remember whether I’ve shared this story or not but if not…. A while ago I saw a program on TV about Hawaii and during the show they caught this big round fish called an “Opah”. It is a very beautiful fish and they said it swims with Tuna in deep water. So while I’m watching they talk about how delicious it is and how it is mostly found in Hawaii and I’m thinking to myself “I’d like to eat an Opah!” But then I thought “I’d probably have to go to Hawaii to eat Opah and that isn’t likely to happen.”
So yesterday I was at United Grocery Outlet, a rather strange grocery store here in town and in their frozen food section they had a big cardboard box filled with vacuum packed small fillets of Opah! And they were only 2 for $1.00! They were cheap. I could hardly believe my luck! I picked out 20 of the nicest fillets and put them in my cart and felt like I had won the lottery! It was like the Universe was granting me a gift. The Universe smiled on me.

Weirdly appropriate Kathleen. Sometimes numbers can be one out, but still. In Bangkok some years ago I had a number with a lot of 9s, and 3s and 9s are considered lucky. So i was forever getting rung.
But wrong numbers can be funny. Years ago on a landline in NZ, I got rung one night, and a great speal came forth from the line.
“I’ve got a big load coming through and I’d like an escort, on the .. date, ok?”
    “Pardon”. I go.
“Yea, its pretty big, need to push some wires out of the way I would think. I’ll need an escort”
“I think you have the wrong number”.
“Is this not the Ministry of transport”?
    ” No”.
Indignant now. “Well I’ve had this number for years, and its always been the Ministry of Transport”.
“Well, I go, I guess they changed their number”.
    ” Oh . ok”.
Was kind of funny as he was so sure he got it right. Lyn x.

Believe it or not, I have a new one!
My mom was talking about taking a family trip to Fripp Island, where we have vacationed many times in the past. I haven’t been there since 2001.
The day after this conversation, my first girlfriend, whom I hear from every six months or so, emails me, asking about our trips to Fripp in the past! I can’t remember discussing Fripp with her any time in last several years at least.
I told her about the situation but didn’t use the s-word. In her next email she says, “Yes, quite the synchronicity!”

Adding to a deceased thread again, as is my wont, it’s only just occurred to me to recount something that happened lately which may give some insight into the mechanism of a particular type of synchronicity.
Doing my best to keep it succinct, I had a once very close friend – we’ll use his initial, “Y” – who I fell out with several years ago and have not seen since. Over the years we’ve had phases of online or text communication that flares up for a while and then fades away again. During this period he’s been relevant to a number of “psychic” incidents around me, which may add to the idea one remains somehow “entangled” with people at a fundamental level.
By the start of last year all communication had ceased and he’s very much become a figure from the past. But in late September something very strange happened. In the course of a single day coincidences started piling up around me linked by the common theme of Y. I won’t bore you with them now but a good 5 or 6 overlapping but unconnected events occurred in one day that involved reminders of him, his name and his existence. It felt for all the world that there must be meaning to it..that the “universe” or “someone up there” was trying to get my attention. But to do what? I had no means to contact him even if I wanted to. It left me rather scratching my head..it had the appearance of meaning but none was discernible. So what was the point of it?
Well as it happens recently, if briefly, I was in one of those aforementioned periods of renewed long distance communication with Y. (he is in fact the person who got on the wrong train in the previous anecdote)And it occurred to me to ask him – without yet telling him the reason – if he had anything dramatic or traumatic happening around him in late September by any chance. At first he couldn’t think of anything..oh…except.. “That’s when I had alopecia..patches of hair were coming out in clumps due to stress..it got worse in September”.
Now for me this ..er..”coincidence” is hard to resist. At the time he’s suffering extreme stress for whatever reason events spring up around me, his former close friend, drawing my attention to him. Might this suggest another mechanism for certain types of synchronicity : a mechanism related to that behind crisis apparitions and some poltergeist activity. The internal disturbances in the mind of one person effecting the external material world around a connected person. A distress signal sent out unconsciously which arrives in the form of attention grabbing coincidences?
    Hmm….

I had a funny thing happen the other day. I’ve taken up bar trivia after running into an acquaintance on the street who invited me onto their team. I’ve long been an ocean liner buff, and devour books about the golden age of companies like CGT, Cunard and the storied ships they built. Bar trivia questions tend to be pretty general, but I spent a week hoping for something liner related and not concerning the Titanic. Lo and behold, they up and ask what famous ship was torpedoed in 1915, exactly the question I was hoping they would ask, since it’s general enough to be part of trivia for a general audience, but wouldn’t be instantly apparent to a movie going public with Titanic seared into their collective memory. One would actually have to know a little more about the subject. The typical “explanation” is that it’s random and I just don’t remember the number of times it did not happen. I’ve always been amused by this line of argument, since it requires assuming a lot of occurrences simply to preserve the random hypothesis and doesnt attempt to consider the likelihood of that particular question popping up.
